Welcome to Drumaglea Salers

Drumaglea Salers was established in 1986 by Patrick and Judith Boyd shortly after moving to the Isle of Tiree as young Vets. The herd started with the purchase of their first in-calf heifer, Vendee (pictured left) from Brian Walling’s Cumbrian Herd.

Other early purchases were Veritable and Cumbrian Veritable (FSG 93007), also from Brian’s herd. Since then the other animals brought into the herd have been: Cuil Ulva (CF CD 2007), Rigel Mithril (RCF CD 2007), Rigel Alicia (CF CD 2009), Cumbrian Charmaine (467) and Cumbrian Rouge (472).

Semen used in the herd is from Domino, Foxtrot, Indiana Jones, Preenbank Neptune and imported semen from Sancy, Ublo, Ringo, Bronson, Variegeois, Ulsan, Odon and Baron. Recently a homebred bull Drumaglea Zenith has been introduced as a sire (sire: Sancy, dam: Rigel Mithril).

In 1990, Vendee was Champion Female Salers at the Royal Highland Show and in 1991 was Reserve Female Champion while a Vainqueur son of hers was Reserve Champion Male that same year.

In 1997 Drumaglea Kingpin (a Domino son of Vendee) was Champion at Castle Douglas and in February 2012 Drumaglea Yeoman (a Sancy son of Drumaglea Pearl) was Reserve Champion Male at Stirling.

There has been a strong local demand for Drumaglea bulls which has been fortunate given costs of transportation to mainland sales.

Drumaglea Salers are allowed to grow naturally and most of the herd are outwintered on silage. More than three quarters of the farm is rough grazing allowing the true characteristics of the Salers breed to shine through – click here for more information about the breed in general.
